BATANGAS CITY: Dr. Tirso Ronquillo, president of Batangas State University (BatStateU), The Philippines' National Engineering University, has pledged to be at the forefront of driving innovation as he officially took oath as an executive member- academe representative of the National Innovation Council (NIC) in accordance with R.A. No. 11293, the Philippine Innovation Act.
The oath was officiated by National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Secretary Arsenio Balisacan, Ronquillo's formal assumption of the role. The oath-taking ceremony took place on July 6 at BatStateU's innovation hub, the Knowledge, Innovation, Science and Technology (KIST) Park Center, in the STEER Hub Building at BatStateU Alangilan.
BatStateU engineering students win Unesco hackathon

Batangas State University (BatStateU) students emerged champions in the first WED Hackathon at the UNESCO's World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development last March 4, 2022. BatStateU students won over 125 student teams from 23 countries. Students from the University of British Columbia Okanagan in Canada and the Egerton University in Kenya placed second and third respectively.
The WED Hackathon challenge was to demonstrate a sustainable engineering solution addressing a global real-world problem. global real-world problem.
Tackling Water Accessibility in a Changing Climate," BatStateU Team WONDERPETS (Water remediatiON using metal-organic framework DERived from PET bottleS) devised a water pollutant adsorbent based on a metal-organic framework, chemically recycling terephthalic acid extracted from PET bottles.
The resulting material is extremely porous, cost-efficient, and reusable, making it a sustainable means of removing pollutants from water. Team WONDERPETS is composed of BatStatel Chemical Engineering students Ghia Luwalhati, Nicole Elizabeth Tan, and Reaner Jacqueline Bool and their mentor, Dr. Reymark Maalihan of the Material Testing and Calibration Center (MTCC) of the university's Science, Technology, Engineering and Environment Research (STEER) Hub. They were the only team from the Philippines that made it in the final round along with eight other teams from Australia, Canada, China, India, and Kenya.
